In many cases the allocation of a particular Laboratory to a Division is an organizational convenience and collaboration between Divisions is strongly encouraged. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Core Facility IDIBAPS, Barcelona The IDIBAPS magnetic resonance Imaging core facility provides services related to MRI techniques for in-house and external researchers and to industries connected with health. We perform first-rate pre-clinical (7 Tesla Bruker) and clinical (3 Tesla Siemens) research using structural and functional MRI, resonance spectroscopy, molecular imaging, image processing among other MR techniques. In addition we offer training in techniques and basic research to enable them to conduct experimental and clinical studies, thereby allowing them to explore the advantages of translational research. Experimental Surgery and Animal House Platform (IdISPa), Balearic Islands IdISPa was created with the aim of providing a service to the preclinical research based on experimental models. It has conventional installations with type 2 biosafety level, suitable for the research development and teaching in experimental animals, in compliance with Spanish legislation ( RD 53/2013 ) and European (Directive 2010-63 -EU) . Periodic health checks will be made to experimental animals following the recommendations of FELASA as well as hygienic and sanitary controls to the feed , shavings , water, environment and surfaces of installations to ensure the welfare of animals and quality research . Biobank, Balearic Islands Biobank platform Biobanks are reservoirs of biomedical samples for research, with the needed quality requirements for the current technological availability and the legal requirements of the current regulations. Any researcher with a funded project can access to the currently available samples in the biobank: Biobank HUSE HUSE Biobank is a platform created with the objective of coordinating the collection, processing, storage and transfer of biological samples to promote biomedical quality research. Biobank \\\'s mission is to provide the scientific community a standardized collection of biological samples that will promote and conduct a biomedical quality research according to current legislation. HUSE Biobank is registered in the National Register of Bionbanks with number B527. It is a member of : - Biobanks National Network Platform of Carlos III Health Institute. - European , Middle Easternand African Society for Biopreservation and Biobanking (ESBB). In addition, CIBERES Pulmonary Biobank is located in IdISPa installations. CIBERES pulmonar biobank NationalBiobank Network aimed at supporting translational research, mainly in respiratory pathologies andrelated diseases. It has a diverse catalog of lung tissue samples, whole blood, hemoderivatives, other samples of interest with extensive clinical information (including computerized tomographies - TCs ) . Cytometry and Cell Cultures Platform, Balearic Islands Flow cytometry is the measurement of properties of individual cells or microscopic particles in suspension through fluorescent markers. Metabolomic and Fluxomic, Toulouse The Metabolomic & Fluxomic platform of Toulouse METATOUL is a core facility opened to public as well as to private researchers (academic laboratories : cancer research, drug discovery, food toxicology, plants, microbiology, systems biology; industries : pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies, food industries). It is a part of the regional life science research platform network, Genopole Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées. MetaToul also represents one of the four members of the French National Infrastructure for metabolomics (MetaboHUB). The platform provides large-scale facilities (NMR & MS equipments), tools, and expertise to support research projects that require in-depth investigations of metabolism, its regulation or its engineering, within the fields of microbiology and of human health & food safety. METATOUL supports projects in functional genomics or systems biology with main applications in microbial metabolism, biotechnology, plant-microorganism interactions, microbial pathogenesis, link between metabolism and virulence, xenobiotic metabolism, food toxicology, endocrine disruption. MetaToul is a multi-organisms platform (INRA, CNRS, INSERM, University of Toulouse, Toulouse Hospitals), CNOCand IBiSAlabeled and recognized as a National strategic platform by the INRA. Fermentation Pilot Plant (PPF), Barcelona The Fermentation Pilot Plant was created in 1998 with the mission of promoting the transfer of knowledge and experience in the pharmaceutical, chemical, veterinary and food industries, facilitating the implementation of advanced technologies on an industrial scale to provide competitiveness to these companies. The PPF works with the vision to become a reference in bioprocesses development, improvement and innovation, providing scientific and technological support for semi-industrial scale cultivation of microorganisms and development of enzymatic processes. The facilities are located in a laboratory belonging to the Chemical Engineering Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). The Centre is linked to this Department and uses its basic infrastructure. Since 2000, the Centre is part of the "Xarxa d'Innovació Tecnològica" (Xarxa IT). In 2009, Xarxa IT was renamed TECNIO (ACC1Ó) maintaining the goal of facilitating access to technologies developed by PPF to companies, public and private institutions. National Centre of Genotyping (CEGEN), Santiago de Compostela, Galicia The Group of Genomic Medicine at the USC ( is one of the nodes of the National Centre of Genotyping. It provides support to scientists in their genotyping projects in every aspect of research, from planning, DNA extraction, genotyping and data interpretation. We use state-of-the-art technologies to offer several genotyping, methylation profiling and related services that meet the demands of Spanish researchers. Main objectives are: To offer different public and private groups a service that responds effectively to their requirements for genotyping SNPs, CNVs and InDels large scale and low cost To offer external tailored fit services for providing support to researchers in the PRE and POST phases of genotyping. Technical Radiology Protection Unit, Barcelona The UTPR-UAB is authorised by the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) to act throughout Spain. The main functions of the UTPR-UAB are to advise, control, measure and certify that a radioactive or radiodiagnosis installation complies with current legislation for radiological protection. Since 1994, the former Service for Radiological Protection and current UTPR-UAB provide coverage in this area to the whole Autonomous University of Barcelona. Transgenic Animal Unit (UAT-CBATEG-UAB), Barcelona The Transgenic Animals Unit (TAU) of the Animal Biotechnology and Gene Therapy Center (CBATEG) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), is a state-of-the-art facility that provides research and technical services for the generation, management, genotypng and preservation of genetically altered mouse models, to support research projects of both, internal and external investigators. The UAT offers tailored services for the generation of transgenic mous models by pronuclear DNA microinjection, as well as knowckout and knockin mice (KO-KI) by injection of recombinant embryonic stem cells, either obtained at the Unit or imported from external sources, into blastocysts/8 cells embryos. Other support services available are: rederivation of contaminated mouse lines, cryopreservation of mouse embryos/sperm/ovary, recovery of live mouse lines from frozen embryos/sperm/ovary and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Mice are maintained in the CBATEG Animal Facility that guaranties SPF conditions (Specific Pathogen Free), following FELASA recommendations. View information
Animal Service - Laboratory Animal Integrated Services (SE-SIAL), Barcelona SE-SIAL is a service that includes the Servei d’Estabulari UAB (rodent housing facility) and mostly, investigators of the Animal Physiology Unit of the Veterinary Faculty. The Servei d’Estabulari comprises a 1000 m2 animal housing facility for rodents, mostly rats and mice, divided in two areas: a conventional area and a barrier area equipped with ventilated racks, ventilated cabinets and Laminar Flow Change Stations. Within the same facility there are two laboratories that allow to perform different in vivo procedures. We perform a variety of preclinical studies with in vivo models, giving a very closed advising. SE-SIAL also works in collaboration with different departments of the Veterinary Faculty of the UAB, as the Microbiology Department, Parasitology Department and Anatomic Pathology Department; in order to give Laboratory Animal Health Surveillance services, as well as animal welfare advising. We expect to develop a service that allows to perform a quality evaluation of different diagnosticlaboratories. For that, SE-SIAL is working in the Laboratory Animal Quality Network, for the development of the Performance Evaluation Program for Diagnostic Laboratories, which is promoted by the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS)SE-SIAL also gives training to investigators of different private and public fields, through the course of FELASA Acreditation type C (Curs per a investigadors usuaris d’animals per a experimentació I altres finalitats científiques), and the Acreditation type D in laboratory animal specialist (RD 1201/205), achieved by the master’s degree Máster en Ciencia y Bienestar del Animal de Laboratorio. Agroalimentary Microbiology Quality Service, Barcelona The purpose of the SCT for microbiological quality in the agricultural and food industry is to offer technical support, scientific advice and training in the field of microbiological determinations in food, water, environments and food handlers. It covers a wide range of micro-organisms, especially those that cause problems in food, either because they are the origin of its microbiological alteration or because they are pathogenic micro-organisms. Proteomics and Genomics Service, Barcelona The proteomics and genomics service, created in 2005, answers the needs generated by Research groups of the UdL as well as biotechnology companies that require this technique to carry out their research. It offers technology for the study of genes and gene or proteomic expression (series of proteins expressed in the cell). The equipment of the unit enables identification and quantification of proteins, previously isolated chromatographically or electrophoretically purified DNA or RNA, techniques that constitute a basic tool for research in the area of cell and molecular biology. Proteomics Service, Barcelona The Proteomics Service is made up of two units: Proteomics: Proteomics can briefly be described as the study of the proteome or set of proteins in a cell, which determines their cell functions. This area of research is growing fast in the post-genomics era, its main aim being the identification of levels of protein expression, the study of protein interaction and the determination of possible post-translational modification. The area of Proteomics at the UPF focuses on two complementary techniques: automated sequencing of the extreme N-terminal of proteins using Edman degradation (Applied Biosystems Procise cLC 491 sequencer) and application of mass spectrometry for protein identification (Applied Biosystems Voyager STR Biospectrometry Workstation and Q-Star Pulsar mass spectrometers). Peptide synthesis: Solid phase peptide synthesis is based on the sequential addition of amino acids (AAs) to an insoluble polymer support. Adequate protection of the Na group of the successively incorporated AAs is therefore crucial, as is that of the lateral chains of trifunctional AAs. The splitting of the peptide-polymer bond with simultaneous deprotection frees the peptide. Depending on the type of support bonding used, the extreme C-terminal of the peptide can be a carboxyl, a carboxamide or even other, less common functionalities. This strategy for synthesis allows us to obtain peptides and proteins of up to 40-50 residues long. Very exceptionally, we can also obtain lengths in the region of 50-100 residues. With the use of more specialised protection schemes we can obtain cyclic peptides (head-to-tail, or cycled in lateral chains with amide or disulfide bonds), or modified (phospho-, gluco-, lipo- and sulfopeptides). Genomics and Bioinformatics Service_ UAB, Barcelona The Servei de Genòmica i Bioinformàtica (SGB) is a research support facility for all members of the UAB, both from the campus and from the “esfera”, and also for other public and private institutions. The SGB was created in 1992 and it was one of the pioneers in Spain to offer automatic DNA sequencing.The SGB has participated in a large amount of projects concerning basic and applied research. The SGB has three main working actions. First, sequencing and fragment analysis of DNA from any organism. Second, printing, hybridization and analysis of DNA microarrays.And finally the bioinformatic analysis of all generated data. The combinations of mass spectrometry (MS) may be either with gas chromatography (GC/MS) or high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC/MC) and enable performing a wide variety of analyses. The new chromatography units available in the service offer very high analytical separation capacity in a wide variety of samples. Furthermore, mass spectrometry is, in many cases, the most sensitive molecular analysis method and the one providing most information about the mass and structure of the molecule studied. Mass Spectrometry Core Facility, Barcelona Set up in September 2007, the Mass Spectrometry Core Facility provides the research community at IRB Barcelona and researchers from external institutions with modern chromatographic and mass spectrometric tools for the identification and characterisation of a broad range of biological species. The facility is equipped with high accuracy and high resolution mass spectrometers with newly incorporated mass spectrometry (MS) techniques such as ion mobility spectrometry (IM) coupled to high performance tandem MS, Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance MS with ECD (electron capture dissociation) and IRMPD (infrared multiphoton dissociation) fragmentation techniques. The facility performs method development for the identification and characterisation of various biological species, from small molecules to large biomolecules (e.g. intact proteins). Non-covalent protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions are also studied by MS and IM/MS to gain insight into the mechanisms of action of these proteins in biological processes. Environment Center Laboratory (LCMA), Barcelona The laboratory is meanly dedicated to the assessment of the air quality in urban areas (interior and exterior air). The tasks performed are the designing and construction of air probes capture systems, the chemical analysis for the identification and quantification of atmospheric contaminants as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (HAP), etc., and the numeric modelling of atmospheric contaminants dispersion. The facility is committed to providing a complete range of light microscopy imaging systems and techniques to researchers at IRB Barcelona and other institutions at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), and visiting scientists. The facility provides full-time access to state-of-the-art conventional and laserbased microscopes, as well as assistance in advanced imaging techniques for image processing, and data interpretation and presentation. Vectorology (PVM), Montpellier Montpellier Vectorology (PVM) is a structure dedicated to the production of recombinant viral particles for the requesting laboratories. Two technical platforms are available: 1) for the production of lentiviral ( 2) for the production of adenoviral particles (canine and human adenovectors; In addition to these services, PVM also gives advice and carries out development activities. Advice consists in helping research groups to find the best experimental strategies for their projects (pseudotypes, use of specific promoters, choice of the best vector...) Genomic Collection (MGC)/Proteines Recombinates (Pro Rec), Montpellier The ProRec Facility (Recombinant Proteins) is housed at the CNRS site of the route de Mende and includes a technical platform (MGC) dedicated to the management of a hORFeome library and another one (PPR) devoted to the production and purification of recombinant proteins. This facility is part of the 41 major regional technical platforms (GEPETOs) and includes high-technology equipment and a team of 8 people at the service of researchers and companies, particularly Small and Medium Companies and regional start-ups. A steering committee manages the facility and a price policy validated by the CNRS has been put in place. 1) The Montpellier Genomic Collection (MGC) platform has a human ORFeome library (with an associated service for the high-throughput cloning of these ORFs in many different expression vectors) and also siRNA libraries. These resources allow the rapid access to specific ORFs and to their function as well the investigation of the whole genome by large-scale screenings. 2) The Recombinant Protein platform (PPR) proposes customized cloning, production (optimization and scaling-up) in different prokaryote (E.coli) or eukaryote (baculovirus, S2 cells, Pichia pastoris) expression systems, and purification of recombinant proteins. DNA Combing (MDC), Montpellier MDC (Montpellier DNA Combing) is the molecular combing facility of Montpellier. Molecular combing allows spreading and aligning long DNA fibres on silanized coverslips for the analysis by fluorescence microscopy of micro-rearrangements or for the study of chromosome replication in eukaryotes. For this last application, replicating cells are pulsed with thymidine analogues (IdU to CldU) and then genomic DNA is extracted and deposed (combed) on silanized coverslips. The incorporation of the analogues is detected with specific antibodies coupled to different fluorophores and the individual DNA molecules can reach 2 Mb in length. View information

Centre of Magnetic Resonance_ITQB CERMAX, Lisbon CERMAX - Centro de Ressonância Magnética António Xavier, located within ITQB (Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica), is one of the centers of the Portuguese National Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Network. Its principal mission is to make the best possible conditions for using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance available to the Portuguese scientific community, as well as disseminating knowledge of the technique. Despite national academic community focused on the CERMAX is a center open to the outside, accepting proposals for projects from scientists and researchers of foreign as well as domestic origin and also from industry. CERMAX hosts the spectrometer with the highest field in Portugal (a Bruker AvanceII+ of 800MHz equipped for experiments with solids as well as liquids) and the center also has two spectrometers of 500 MHz (one of which is also equipped for the acquisition of spectra of solids) and one of 400 MHz. These instruments support a wide range of applications, including the determination of structures of proteins or small molecules, metabolic studies, science of materials and in vivo NMR, among others. Spanish Type Culture Collection_CECT, Valencia The CECT, Spanish Type Culture Collection, is the only collection of microorganisms that is official and of public nature in Spain, which maintains and supplies bacteria, filamentous fungi and yeasts. Since1991 it is one of the services of the University of Valencia, and presently it acts as the first BRC (Biological research Centre) for microorganisms in Spain ( An on-line catalogue is available on the web ( with detailed information about its holdings, services and activities. The transfer conditions of the microorganisms deposited and supplied are regulated by a ‘Material Transfer Agreement’ (MTA) that follows the recommendations of the Convention for Biological Diversity. IDIBELL Animal Facility covers an area of 700m². It has only houses mice, grouped together in two different types: genetically modified and immunodepressed. In both cases the animals are housed in cages with filters (in cupboards or on ventilated racks) that correspond with the conditions for care relating to their characteristics with the aim of avoiding any possible contamination that could affect them. CERMAX has several NMR spectrometers (300, 400, 500 and 800 MHz), including the highest field NMR spectrometer in Portugal. This equipment is part of the National NMR Facility. CERMAX - Centro de Ressonância Magnética António Xavier, located within ITQB (Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica), is one of the centers of the Portuguese National Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Network. Its principal mission is to make the best possible conditions for using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance available to the Portuguese scientific community, as well as disseminating knowledge of the technique. Drosophila genetics and modeling Instituto de Biomedicina, Valencia At the IBV-CSIC there are facilities to work with Drosophila melanogaster, including rearing, genetics, histology, and microscopy. The research group is led by Dr. Galindo, who has long experience in several aspects of basic and biomedical research using this model organism. Current projects are the regulation of cell signaling by cell polarity and the study of mitochondrial dynamics in peripheral neuropathies. Collaborations could be established when another partner could envisage a utility to develop a Drosophila model, taking advantage of the features of this organism: advanced genetic analysis, transgenics, and high-throughput functional studies. In this regard there are several examples that are being used currently such as KRAS mutations and cetuximab efficacy, IL28b and peginterferon-γ efficacy, CYP3A5 and tacrolimus pharmacokinetic, CYP2C19 and voriconazol or clopidogrel pharmacokinetic..etc. Thus, pharmacogenetic laboratory has an equipment of DNA and RNA analyzers which allows to detect several single polymorphisms mutations, copy number, deletions, insertions and a variety of DNA-RNA abnormalities which are related with a change of response/toxicity of several drugs. The main body of our research is devoted on one side to the study and understanding of fundamental physical phenomena associated to state variables (electrons, spin, phonons, photons, plasmons, etc), the investigation of new properties derived from tailored nanostructures and the opening of new routes and fabrication processes for the conception of new nanodevices. Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG)_UAB, Barcelona The Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) is a public consortium, with a legal personality that incorporates among its research groups the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries (IRTA) and the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB) as well as other researchers hired by the CRAG or other institutions as ICREA, all of them devoted to the study of genomics and genetics of plants and farm animals. CRAG is included in a Consolider project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation as a Consolider Center. It aims to be a centre of excellence, centred in Southern Europe but open to the surrounding regional areas, with an international strategy based on the attraction, maintenance and motivation of highly qualified and professional human resources. Bioinformatics Core Facility_IDIBAPS, Barcelona The Bioinformatics Platform is mainly devoted to the analysis and support in the interpretation of data coming from high throughput disciplines. The integration of data coming from the Transcriptomics, Genomics, Proteomics, or Metabolomics fields requires huge efforts in the development of common languages, tools, and specific databases. Differential expression or classification studies in every “omics” field usually face two big challenges: the high dimensionality and the small number of samples, and these are the more frequent type of studies undertaken at our Platform. Furthermore, biomedical research is frequently aimed at understanding very complex biological problems for the discovery of specific biological markers. It is then necessary to use sophisticated tools with complex statistical methodologies to derive information in the usual conditions of high-throughput experiments. We mainly use Bioconductor Project packages together with other complex tools to integrate databases information (i.e. Ingenuity, Transfac-Explain). At present, we are involved in projects of the emerging field of Systems Biology, aimed at analyzing and integrating data from the entire “omics” fields to ultimately create working models of entire biological systems. Our fundamental tasks are: Consultancy; Intensive analysis of “omics” technologies data in collaborative settings; Administration of Bioinformatics resources; and Development of new tools andcustomized Databases. Metabolomics platform, Barcelona The Metabolomics Platform is a joint research facility created by URV (Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain) and CIBERDEM (Spanish Biomedical Research Network in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Disorders). The Metabolomics Platform is part of IISPV (Pere Virgili Health Research Institute), a major medical research organization that undertakes numerous research initiatives in the country. The main goal of the Metabolomics Platform is to offer metabolomic services to the biomedical and clinical research groups from CIBERDEM and URV. The main vision of the Metabolomics Platform is not only act as a measurement facility but to offer metabolic consulting, trying to get fully involved in the metabolic-related experiments proposed by the groups. Laboratory Animal Applied Research Platform (LAARP)_PCB, Barcelona Research involving laboratory animals is centralized in the Animal Research Center (SEA), which is located in the Modular Building of the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB). Its services are available to users of the PCB and the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), as well as to researchers from the private sector and other public institutions. Occupying 920 m2, the installations of the SEA-PCB have been designed to house rodents and aquatic species. The SEA-PCB has the following objectives: - To provide for the care and welfare of laboratory animals, and to carry out periodic health monitoring. - To cover the users' needs by providing them with the assessment and equipment necessary to carry out their research on laboratory animals. - To ensure observance of all legal and ethical standards concerning to the use of animals for research and other scientific ends. - The SEA-PCB houses small rodents. Controlled Environment Laboratory, Barcelona Class 1000 physical-chemical laboratory with a floor space of 173m2. It is possible to perform research work in a highly pure environment always provided such work does not involve a risk of contamination or degradation of the laboratory conditions. The laboratory is divided into two areas: one general and another for specific use for photolithography. Furthermore it also has a store, a room dedicated to the production of de-ionised water and another for the generation of ultra-clean air. The laboratory equipment is specifically designed for work on silica substrates (membranes) and flat technologies. The activities of the service are marked by support, both material and technical, for all user groups that require the use of its installations for their research work educational purposes.
