Added value of the cooperation : This collaboration maximises the synergies resulting from a combination of simulation and experimentation with aim to optimize the best formulation of the new artificial blood substitutes

Summary of the proposal : The last decade of the 20th century has yielded a remarkable progress in the field of first generation artificial blood substitutes. This first generation of products, suitable as oxygen carriers only and often referred to as oxygen therapeutics, is now in clinical trials. It has an enormous potential especially in surgery with extensive blood loss, and different substitutes have already been developed for this purpose.

The nearly null volatility of ionic liquids at atmospheric conditions, their easy recovery and therefore, recyclability, as well as their tuneable toxicity completely justify the application of fluorinated ionic liquids for improving the available oxygen therapeutics. The aforementioned aspects motivated us to develop novel neoteric fluorinated ionic liquids that combine the best of perfluorocarbons properties with those of ionic liquids. The final goal of this project is to give the first step into the development of a new and improved generation of oxygen therapeutics containing fluorinated ionic liquids.
